Activity in Care Homes: "Studies suggest that almost 50% of care home residents' time is spent asleep, socially withdrawn or inactive, with only 3% on constructive activity" (Ballard et al 2001) extract from My Home Life Report, Help the Aged 2006. That is the premise behind the project that recruits volunteers to provide activities in Care Homes.

We continue to work with care homes promoting increased physical activity in frail older people utilising volunteers and providing support and training to care home staff. To find out more about this scheme please contact Alison Haden on 02920 578372 or email alison.haden @age-concern-cardiff.org.uk

Silver Song / Social singing Clubs: We are currently planning to establish Social singing clubs across residential and community settings in Cardiff and the Vale. These Clubs will be regular sessions of singing and music making for older people and, where appropriate, their carers. The Clubs will not be passive, and do not involve sitting and listening to others performing. Instead everyone joins in with a range of musical activities including not only singing but also playing percussion, using hand chimes and gentle chair based exercises.

To find out more about this scheme please contact Alison Haden on 02920 578372 or email alison.haden @age-concern-cardiff.org.uk

Speaker’s List: Do you need to book a speaker as part of a programme of activities that you organise or co-ordinate for people 50 +, we now have a list of speakers that we are able to share with other older people groups.

The list is not exhaustive and was accurate when initially printed. We plan on updating the list as and when we learn about new speakers. We therefore welcome any details of new speakers to be added to the list. We would like to thank all the speakers for their great support in making this valuable tool available to you, by agreeing that their details could be included in the list.

To be sent a copy of this list please either phone 02920 578372 or email ageing.Well @age-concern-cardiff.org.uk

Free Magazine Life Times: Life Times is currently distributed 3 times per year and is a colourful, high quality A4 publication usually consisting of 24 pages per edition. The newsletter has regular articles on the following topics: healthy ageing (eating & lifestyle), events, activities and classes in Cardiff, entitlements of older people (benefits etc) and organisations and charities that can be of help.

Life Times strives to promote greater communication and participation within communities and provides continuing advice on healthy ageing and lifestyle matters. We are also proactive in ensuring that Life Times continues to be relevant, easy to read and covers pertinent topics.

In order to cover production and distribution costs, we have recently opened the magazine up to advertising opportunities with great success. If you know of any local or national organisations who would be interested in communicating their message to our readers, then please get in touch.

At present, approximately 2500 copies of Life Times are currently distributed throughout Cardiff to receive your copy please phone 02920 578372 to be included on our mailing list or email ageing.Well @age-concern-cardiff.org.uk

Directory of Activities for the 50 plus in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan: Through our contact with groups, clubs and the general public we know that there are a lot of physical and social activities across Cardiff and the Vale that provide people with the opportunity to meet others, make friends, develop new interests, learn new skills or continue to enjoy putting skills and knowledge into practice.

Can we also encourage you to let us know about classes and activities that aren’t listed in the directory as we will be able to add these to our database.

Older persons Eisteddfod: Annually we hold an older person’s eisteddfod to showcase the creative talents of older people in Cardiff and helps challenge negative stereotypes of ageing by providing a more positive image of older people.

To find out when this years event is being held please contact Gloria Yates on 02920 578368 or email gloria.yates @age-concern-cardiff.org.uk.
