An honorary professor of palliative medicine at Cardiff University School of Medicine and consultant at Velindre cancer centre.
Raised to the peerage 2001. Interests: women's careers, medical ethics, Welsh affairs, health and medicine.
Crossbench political c/v includes proposal to ban smoking in public buildings 2003, introduced Private members Bill on Organ Donation 2007 and changed government policy on this 2009, sponsored Sunbeds (Regulation) Bill 2010. Chairs All-party Group on Dying Well.
Already a Patron of Hospice of the Valleys, the Trussell Trust’s foodbank network in Wales and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
President of Royal Society of Medicine 2006-2008, currently President of Chartered Society of Physiotherapy’ of ASH Wales and of Multiple Sclerosis Cymru;
Vice President Marie Curie Cancer Care.
