Age Connects Cardiff & the Vale are working in partnership with OPAAL (Older People’s Advocacy Alliance) and Macmillan Cancer Care to provide one to one support for anyone 50+ who is affected by cancer, their carer or other family members who live in Cardiff or the Vale of Glamorgan.
We can provide one to one support and we can assist in the follow ways:
Accompany you to medical appointments including chemotherapy/radiotherapy
Officer support and understanding / Give time and listen
Assistance to find out what other practical help is available
Help you to obtain services to which you are entitled
Help with paperwork / completing forms
Provide you with support if you are an inpatient in hospital
Assign a support worker to you, who has direct experience of cancer
Cancer can bring bewildering changes to the lives of those diagnosed but can also have a major impact on family, carers and friends. We support older people affected by cancer to make sure that healthcare professionals, social services, benefits and other agencies understand and respect their wishes.
If you need support or would like to talk to someone about it then please contact Angela Jones – Independent Cancer Advocate on 029 20 683681 (there is a 24 hour answer machine service available)
Or you can email the COPA project COPA@ageconnectscardiff.org.uk
We are looking for good listeners aged over 50 with some knowledge of cancer related issues who want to help people take control of their lives. We provide training, regular support and expenses. Ideally we’d need a flexible time commitment of between two to four hours weekly.
We recognise the additional needs for support of cancer patients from Black and Minority Ethnic and Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual and Trans communities. We aim to be fully inclusive and especially welcome the contribution and involvement of volunteers from these communities.
If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer advocate then please contact Alice Matthews – Volunteer Co-ordinator on 029 20 683694 (there is a 24 hour answer machine service available)
Local Cancer Champions
Local Cancer Champions meet quarterly to discuss the development of local service delivery. They actively promote the cancer advocacy service and support project staff and volunteers. We are looking for older people affected by cancer to become local Cancer Champions. If you feel able to contribute to our project at a strategic level, working alongside project staff and healthcare professionals and helping provide direction then please contact our Advocacy Service on 029 20 683683
Our scheme is part of the national Cancer, Older People and Advocacy project led by the Older People’s Advocacy Alliance (OPAAL) and is funded by Macmillan Cancer Support .
The Older People’s Advocacy Alliance blog has lots of information about the cancer advocacy project. It is regularly updated and contributions come from a range of sources. To have a look at the blog click here
The project has been running for over a year now. Read about the 1st year of our project in the following newsletter: COPA Newsletter
